Boise River road land near Parma, ID

Carrie, Morgan and Allison take a spin on the pond.

Josh got the first fish, a small bluegill.

Watermelon and a pond with fish, heaven on earth.

We stopped on the way for a potty stop, Carrie was resting up.

Cindy and Meg get ready to race the other kayakers.

Giant s'mores.

Shoreline view, Carrie and Alison are swimming by their kayak.
We recently bought a 30 acre property with no improvements near Parma.  It has a pond of about 15 acres, our main attraction.  There are many birds and fish, so we should be camping and hunting in style. I saw a wild turkey hen there today.  We'll have our first camping trip this weekend.

Idaho Brit Car Club Summer tour 2011-McCall, ID

This year our tour took us to McCall, as pleasant a mountain town as there is, located on the banks of Payette Lake.  Meg, Cindy and I joined up with the caravan in Horseshoe Bend, we had to go to the passport office in Emmett to get Meg's application on its way.
Cindy and Meg accomplish the passport application.

Once we were together the drive was uneventful, it twist along the North Fork of the Payette from Banks almost to Cascade, ID.  We congregated for lunch at the Jug Mountain Ranch clubhouse, a beautiful setting with a view over the surrounding golf course and houses.
On the patio for lunch and entertainment by golfers flailing away below us.

We then meandered into McCall and checked into the Western Mountain Motel, it was nice with wash hoses and a good breakfast room.  Our cars brightened up the lot considerably.  There was an exceptional turnout this year as many cars from various Washington clubs joined in.  We had two beautiful Jaguar saloons, made on the same day and a Triumph Herald.  We also had our clubs own Daimler convertible and an assortment of fine British iron.  There were about 65 cars all together.  Our meals and social gatherings were lots of fun.  We had a tour of a fine wooden boat restoration shop on Saturday and a drive up Warren Wagon Road to the high country north of McCall along the west side of Payette Lake.
We shopped in McCall on Friday afternoon

My Magnette and a Triumph Reknown, two rare but not valuable cars.

Meg in a rare and fairly valuable Daimler.  Picked best in show.

Jaguar saloons, queens of the road.

On Sunday we zipped home early so I could teach Sunday School.  A great weekend jaunt.

MG 2011 Reno-Tahoe "A Western Experience" June 13- 17, 2011

Every five years the National Council of MG Registers hosts an all-register meeting and car show.  This means that all types of MGs come together for a large gathering, this year about 630 cars were on display in San Rafael Park in Reno.  There were pre-war Magnas, Midgets, Magnettes and saloons- SA and Y-types.  There was a grand turnout of T types, C, D, and F.  Many MGAs with one variant Elva.  B's galore, of course, and last but not least, 11 Magnette ZA and ZBs.

Maggie and her sisters in the line up.
This was our Magnette's first long drive, we left on Monday morning and took about 8 hours to cover the 420 miles.  We went through the Owyhee Mountain region of south west Idaho and into Oregon on Highway 95.  There were some steep climbs, this area is very bleak with little human activity.  The mountain peaks remain snow covered.  We turned onto I 80 in Winnemucca and arrived at the Silver Legacy Casino and hotel without any troubles.  There were MGs everywhere on the streets and in the parking garage.
Maggie picked up a million tiny bugs on the drive down.
The Legacy complex includes three city blocks and the El Dorado and Circus Circus casino and hotel complexes.  It was like a maze inside, we had trouble finding some rooms and even the doors to the outside world.

Reno is a fun place, there is a vibrant area along the river with a new Triple A ball park and whitewater course on the Truckee River.  We liked walking there and found good ice cream.

On Tuesday we had the Magnette breakfast and viewed a good slide show from the Delavan meeting last summer.  We heard of a group drive leaving from the top of the Legacy parking garage and decided to tag along to Virginia City and Lake Tahoe.  We we got to the top floor, the 11th, there were a few cars and John Twist was setting up for his rolling tech sessions.  I said hello to him and he asked me how the car was running, next thing I knew I was first in line for a tune up.  My carbs were in worse adjustment than I thought!!

After my quick tune we followed a mixed group of MGs from a California club up a twisty path to Virginia City.  Cindy and I decided that since we were coming back with a bus tour the next day we would continue on to Carson City and our lunch stop ahead of the group.  The burgers and malts were good, but the tiny cafe probably got pretty crowded when the whole group showed up.  We drove past the state capital and legislative buildings and headed up to Lake Tahoe.  The lake sits at about 6000 ft, passes in are between 8,000 to almost 9,000 feet.  The little car was mildly out of breath but not bad.  We went past the Rose Mountain ski area, lots of snow left to about 7,000 foot level.  We made it back to the Silver Legacy and walked to the Truckee River area in Reno for dinner.

On Wednesday we had a bus tour with a very interesting guide to Virginia City with a drive through of Carson City.  Virginia City, with its mining lore and tales of great riches, is an interesting place.  The "Silver Kings" and their huge fortunes make for some good daydreams.  The Ponderosa was nearby too!  Huge mine shafts, high temperatures, and hard work make the miner's life seem less than inviting.

Tunnel on the grade.

I wished to be "big" but no dice.
The trip home was uneventful, the little car had no problems and had more uphill power after the carb tune up.  The car show went well and Maggie won second in class, pretty good for our restoration, and in the largest national MG show too.

Birthday means summer is here

My birthday on June 3 has nearly coincided with summer's arrival all my life.  While growing up my birthday party at Swan Lake was the best, I had two there as I recall, after fifth and sixth grade.  We had waterfights with canoes, sailfish, and whatever else that would float.

Those were the days, when the teacher's unions respected Memorial Day and Labor Day as the proper boundaries for the school year.  Summer at the lake meant baseball, swimming, skiing and hikes.  We went to town once a week for band, to mow the townhouse lawn and for mom to wash clothes. Usually we went to church on Sunday, of course.  Summer thunder storms with the threat of hail and Twins baseball on the radio were also a highlight.  Before there was cable we had fuzzy TV, three channels were plenty because it wasn't on much anyway.  I do remember watching the moon landing in July 1969 on the TV at the lake.

This year we had a nice small birthday celebration with the Iverson's on Friday.  Angel food cake is my annual birthday choice;  whipped cream and strawberries go well with that.  On Saturday we had our traditional family dinner at Rock Creek Grill, again with Iverson's and Meg, too.  We will have a good old fashioned summer this year, our house will be full as the Iverson's move-in as they will be here when we leave for the Dominican Republic in September.  Meg is here for about a month, Shawn and Anna should be here in August while they are between school sessions.  They may actually be going to China for a year beginning in September.  So we will swim, picnic and have lots of fun.
